Foundation

Carlisle United came into being in 1903 through the amalgamation of Shaddongate United and Carlisle Red Rose.
The new club was admitted to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination in 1905-06, winning promotion the following season.
Devonshire Park was officially opened on 2 September 1905, when St Helens Town were the visitors. Despite defeat in a disappointing 3-2 start, a respectable mid-table position was achieved.

From 1950-51 to 1959-60 the tenacity shown by Carlisle United in the FA Cup was such that they were involved in seven replays including famously one with Arsenal after a goalless draw at Highbury in January 1951 as well as a threesome with Darlington.
